Health Literacy

An important concept in patient education is being promoted by government and private agencies. The concept is Health Literacy. Issues such as noncompliance and missed appointments, may be due to a patient's inability to understand. If written instructions are given but are beyond the patient's reading ability, then those instruction are not worth the paper they are printed on.

Intuitive Eating Book Cover Intuitive Eating, A Revolutionary Program that Works by Evelyn Tribole, M.S., R.D. and
Elyse Resch, M.S., R.D., F.A.D.A.

Are you sick and tired of dieting? Or do you need more "ammunition" to give to your patients on getting rid of diets and how to have a healthy eating mentality? If you or your patients are ready to give up dieting forever, this is the book to read. "Intuitive Eating" is a program that focuses on nurturing your body rather than starving it, encourages natural weight loss over time, and helps you to find the weight that you were meant to be. This book tackles the difficult subject of behavior modification and our eating habits. Most of us know "what we should eat," but identifying and changing our behaviors is a different ball game. We all want the "quick fix" for weight loss, (even though we know it doesn't exist), but usually the changes we need to make are not with the actual food we put in our mouth, it's with the "why" we're putting things in our mouth. This is a realistic, long-term philosophy designed to help you learn how to reject the diet mentality forever, learn how our "eating personalities" define our eating difficulties, and teaches us how to honor hunger and feel fullness. The ten principles covered are valuable for both clinicians and patients.

Evelyn Tribole, M.S., R.D. is an award-winning registered dietitian who specializes in eating disorders. She has a nutrition counseling practice in Irvine, CA. She has written the million-copy bestseller, Healthy Homestyle Cooking as well as six other books. She is the nutritionist for Lifetime TV.com and was a national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association for six years.

Elyse Resch, M.S., R.D., F.A.D.A. has been a nutrition therapist for more than twenty years with a private practice in Beverly Hills, CA. She specializes in eating disorders, Intuitive Eating, preventative nutrition, and is a certified child and adolescent obesity expert. She is on the advisory board of "Healthy Dining" publications, and is a fellow of the American Dietetic Association.
